1. It is a World Record Holder
Opened in August 1836, Liverpool Lime Street is officially the oldest still-operating grand terminus mainline station in the world. While other stations may have opened earlier, Lime Street has remained in its original location as a primary end-point for major rail lines for 190 years.
2. The Roof was a Victorian “Super-Structure”
When the north train shed was completed in 1867, its iron and glass roof had a span of 200 feet. At the time, it was the largest of its kind in the world. The design was so innovative that it didn’t require any upright columns in the centre, creating the vast, bright open space you see today.
3. The “Parisian” Hotel Frontage
The stunning building that fronts the station (now home to the Radisson RED) was originally the North Western Hotel. Designed by Alfred Waterhouse in a French Renaissance style, it was intended to give travellers the feeling of arriving in Paris rather than the industrial North of England.
4. It Wasn’t Always the Main Station
Before Lime Street was built, Liverpool’s main station was actually at Crown Street in Edge Hill. However, Crown Street was too far from the city’s commercial centre. To get trains to Lime Street, engineers had to dig a 2km tunnel through solid sandstone—a massive feat of manual labour in the 1830s.
5. There are Fossils Under Your Feet
If you step outside the station onto William Brown Street, keep your eyes on the flagstones. The “Cultural Quarter” of Liverpool is paved with stone that contains real fossils of ancient sea creatures. It’s a free, open-air museum right on the station’s doorstep!
